17th Annual Locke Street Festival - September 10th 2016
Great things happen when people with passion and commitment get together to plan a community event. Going in, the organizers knew they would not get paid, that there would be an overabundance of free advice and differing of opinions, that getting enough volunteers would seem a bridge too far and that everyone would be exhausted when the event was over. And yet, for the past seventeen years, brave souls have answered yes to the question “Do you want to be on the Locke Street Festival Committee?” This year, it began with John Ellin of Taylor Antiques and Brandon Stanicak of the West Town.
After a late start, the festival bus started rolling and along the way it picked up community supporters and volunteers who believed in giving back to their community. But there is no such thing as a free festival and without corporate sponsorship and volunteers, there would have been admission fees to everything. This year, three companies including RBC Canada, Mackesy Smye Lawyers and Judy Marsales Realtors, along with the City of Hamilton, provided sponsorship funds. In addition, the merchants on the organizing committee gave hundreds of hours of free labour.
Great community events happen when people give of themselves and the 17th Annual promises to be an event to remember with extended hours, more music, expanded family activities and a larger kids zone!We are so glad that so many people decided to get on the Festival bus.Great work everyone!
Until next year !
